Jim Root, full name James Donald Root was born on October 2, 1971 in Des Moines Iowa. He is also known by his number #4. He is best known for being the rhythm guitarist in the hard rock/heavy metal band Slipknot. He also plays lead guitar and sings backing vocals in Iowa based band Stone Sour who he joined in 1995.

Jim Root joined one of the most popular metal bands today Slipknot in 1999, and is the band’s most recent member. He was invited in by Corey Taylor, the Slipknot vocalist and fellow Sour Stone band member. Jim Root is also known as #4 after replacing former #4 Josh Brainard in the band. Jim wears a jester style gimp mask on stage, complete with zipper mouth.

Jim Root has worked on five albums with Slipknot and four albums with Stone Sour, the most recent being Audio Secrecy released in 2010. Jim Root also played on the Roadrunner United Project, performing the solo and harmony guitars on "Tired 'n Lonely" from the project's album “The All-Star Sessions” along with other Slipknot band mate and a group leader Joey Jordison.

Jim Root won a Grammy award with Slipknot in 2006 for best metal performance. He has been nominated for the award six times with both Slipknot and Stone Sour.

Jim Root balances his band duties between Slipknot and Stone Sour, As well as playing lead and rhythm guitar. Jim also plays drums, bass, and keyboards. His usual guitar is a Fender Telecaster on stage. He also plays with a signature edition, being released by Fender in 2007. Fender since then have recently released a signature Jim Root Fender Stratocaster.
