Animals As Leaders guitarist Javier Reyes has revealed that he has been working on a solo project called Mestís and announced the forthcoming release of the projects debut five-song EP ‘Basal Ganglia.’ A preview of the album can be found below.

In an official statement, Reyes explained what inspired him to write the EP: “’Basal Ganglia’ is an EP that comes from several places, and by places, I mean influences. I’ve always wanted to create a style of music that focused on being emotionally exploitive and technically sound, yet simple enough for the average music listener to appreciate.”

He added, that the project gave him the opportunity to showcase different styles of playing on an eight string guitar: “Another influence was using the eight string guitar in a form that is unconventional to the ‘trends’ or independent of characteristics that are found in music styles/genres that have popularized it.”

However, Reyes concluded that the main reason for the EP was for his own artistic expression: “Another and important reason was to create a true form of my own independent voice as an artist. To create music that expressed my personality, upbringing, emotions and musical taste.”

Furthermore, the EP will feature drum programming by AAL drummer Matt Garstka, percussion by Hector Barez and trombone by David Stout, who has worked with Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson in the past.

‘Basal Ganglia’ is set for release on November 27th through Sumerian Records.

Stay tuned for further details.
