ArtQuest has announced that an 18-year-old armless guitarist named George Dennehy from Ashland, Virginia will be not only opening for The Goo Goo Dolls when they perform at the Musikfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania tomorrow (August 7), he will also join the band onstage to play their hit song ‘Iris.’
Dennehy became an internet sensation after he posted a video of himself performing ‘Iris’ with his feet at the Ashland Strawberry Faire in Ashalnd, Virginia in June this year. The video was released on Youtube, to minimal reception. However, once Dennehy posted it to Reddit, it quickly shot to the front page of the site and has since had almost half a million views.
Despite being born without arms, Dennehy has a proven ability on the guitar and is hoping to make a career out of it. In a recent interview with Reddit, Dennehy stated: “I want it [music] to be my career. I have the opportunity to speak/play at different events or churches, you name it! I’m hoping big things will happen.”
As well as his appearance with The Goo Goo Dolls at the Musikfest, Dennehy will play his own set at the Community Stage at the ArtsQuest Center on Tuesday.
According to reports, Dennehy is the 2012 winner of the Virginia-based ‘Richmond’s Got Talent,’ and is the only known person in the world who can play classical string music with his feet. He also plays electric bass and piano.
