Last night (Monday, June 11), Devin Townsend Project mastermind Devin Townsend took home the ‘Dimebag Darrell Shredder Award’ at the 2012 Metal Hammer Golden Gods. A full list of winners can be found below.
Townsend was presented with the award by Dimebag Darrell’s brother and Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul, for his incredible technical prowess and ruthless talent.
A statement posted on Metal Hammer’s website reads as follows: “One of metal’s most adored maniacal geniuses, Devin blew our minds with an ace headlining set at Download this past weekend, and will be returning to the UK later this year! Bring it on!”
Townsend overcame some stiff competition; with Steel Panther’s Satchel, Fear Factory’s Dino Cazares, Killswitch Engage’s Adam Dutkiewicz and Evile’s Ol Drake all nominated for the award.
Meanwhile, Townsend has announced that his upcoming album ‘Epicloud’ will be released as a double album of sorts, on September 18. Townsend explained via Twitter: “So when the ‘Ghost‘ album was finished, I had 12 songs that came out here and there, supposed to be Ghost 2, couldn’t convince label etc… However, Epicloud has 12 extra songs as well, and they have agreed to let me do a digipak version that is essentially a ‘double album’ =] The second disk wont be mixed in the same way, a bit more ‘demo-ish’ in quality, but it completes this cycle without having stragglers after”
Townsend will be embarking on a short, four-date tour of the UK in support of the album at the end of the year. Dates are listed below.
