Two of the most respected guitarists of all time, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards have signed on to perform at the ‘Howlin’ for Hubert’ concert, which is being held in honor of another legendary guitarist, the late Hubert Sumlin.
Clapton and Richards will be joined by several world-renowned acts, including Buddy Guy and Robert Randolph to pay homage to Sumlin, who passed away late last year from heart failure.
Sumlin is remembered as being one of the greatest blues players there ever was. In a career that spanned several decades, he was best known for his work with Howlin’ Wolf, but is also credited as being an influence for several well known guitarists, including both Clapton and Richards. More recently he was listed as being the 43rd greatest guitarist ever, by Rolling Stone magazine.
To say that Sumlin devoted his whole life to music is an understatement; even back in 2002, after suffering cancer and having his lung removed; he still soldiered on, and majestically worked his way around the fretboard, with an oxygen tank by his side.
‘Howlin’ for Hubert’ will take place on Feb. 24 at the Apollo Theatre in New York. Donations from the night will go towards the Jazz Foundation of America.
Other performers scheduled to feature in the event include Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, James Cotton, Gary Clark, Jr., Shemekia Copeland, David Johansen, Danny Kortchmar, Keb’ Mo’, Ivan Neville, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Kim Wilson, and Doyle Bramhall II.
