Ex-Motörhead Guitarist ‘Würzel’ Passes Away

Michael “Würzel” Burston, the former guitarist of iconic rockers Motörhead, passed away yesterday at the age of 61. Motörhead frontman Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister’s longtime bass technician, Tim Butcher, broke the news in a Facebook post, stating, “RIP Wurzle, Great guitarist an a complete gent… We will miss you…”

While no official statement has been released on the cause of the guitarist’s death, it is rumored that Burston died of ventricular fibrillation, caused by cardiomyopathy, better known as heart disease.
Burston played with English bands Bastard and Warfare, prior to joining Motörhead in 1984, where he appeared on six of the bands studio albums plus a collection of live albums, videos and compilations.
Würzel left Motörhead, in 1995 and went on to play in a variety of punk and metal bands, including Splodgenessabounds, WVKEAF and Disgust. The guitarist released an experimental ambient album called “Chill Out or Die” in 1998. More recently, Würzel had started a new band, Leader of Down, who had announced that their debut would be released in 2010, but it never came out.
In 2009, Würzel joined is former Motörhead band mates at the Hammersmith Apollo, where they performed the bands classic song, “Ace of Spades,” you can watch that performance in the YouTube clip below.
