It has been confirmed that legendary guitarist Steve Vai will be embarking on a tour of the U.K. later this year, in support of his forthcoming album ‘The Story Of Light.’ Dates and venues can be found below.
Set for a August 14 release date, ‘The Story Of Light’ comes as Vai’s sixteenth studio album and the follow-up to his acclaimed 2005 offering ‘Real Illusions: Reflections.’
‘The Story Of Light’ continues on from where ‘Real Illusions: Reflections’ left off, following “the cosmic journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment and redemption.”
Although the album is mainly instrumental, it does feature special guest vocalist Aimee Mann, who duets on a song she co-wrote with Vai called ‘No More Amsterdam.’ Furthermore, ‘The Voice’ finalist Beverly McClellan lends her vocal talents on Vai’s take on the traditional Gospel/blues call and response song ‘John the Revelator.’
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Vai explained that his interpretation of the song was inspired by the 1930 recording by Blind Willie Johnson. “I heard Blind Willie Johnson’s version and it oozed with mojo. I was overwhelmed with the compunction to add some voodoo hot sauce to it.” Both versions of the song can be heard below.
Vai’s tour of the UK kicks off in December. Dates are as follows:
Dec 1st – Portsmouth Guildhall
Dec 2nd – London HMV Hammersmith Apollo
Dec 3rd – Wolverhampton Civic Hall
Dec 5th – Newcastle City Hall
Dec 6th – Ipswich Regent Theatre
Dec 7th – Manchester O2 Apollo
